About This Course

If you are thinking of a career in the motor vehicle repair industry, then our courses could be what you are looking for. Motor vehicle engineers are in high demand, with over 34 million cars on our roads today, the need to repair and maintain motor vehicles in today’s modern world is essential. Skills shortages mean 42% of vacancies are difficult to fill and, with the industry continuing to grow, organisations are always looking for people with the right qualifications and experience.

Our courses have a mostly practical approach to content and delivery, and incorporate many different assessment techniques, which will stimulate and interest you as you progress. The combination of units provide you with a range of skills and knowledge needed within industry, enabling you to progress confidently with your studies.

You will be guided by skilled tutors and have access to workshops which are equipped with everything you would find in a professional garage including Snap-on code readers, PicoScope oscilloscopes and diagnostic equipment.

Study at Level:



  • Level 1 Diploma

  • Level 2 Diploma

What You Will Learn

Whilst working on the different vehicles in the workshop, which include electric and hybrid vehicles, you will learn the skills needed to remove and replace various vehicle systems including tyres, brakes and suspensions, as well as learning the principles of engines and electrical systems. Other areas include chassis and frames, engines, transmissions and general vehicle servicing.

Level 1 Diploma

The course will cover the maintenance and repair of:

  • Health & Safety
  • Engines
  • Steering and suspension
  • Brakes
  • Exhaust 
  • Chassis
  • Electrical systems

Level 2 Diploma 

  • Carrying out routine maintenance
  • Removing and replacing engine units and components
  • Removing and replacing auxiliary electrical units and components
  • Removing and replacing chassis units and components
  • Contributing to workplace good housekeeping
  • Health and safety
  • Positive working relationships

Please note that some units have an exam as part of their assessment criteria.

Entry Requirements

You will be required to complete a satisfactory interview, be able to provide a suitable reference, and have a genuine interest in becoming a motor vehicle engineer prior to applying.

Level 1 Diploma You will require GCSEs grade 1-2 or equivalent including Foundation Awards / Entry Level Certificates.

Level 2 Diploma  You will require achievement of a level 1 Motor Vehicle Diploma.

ENGLISH & MATHS If you haven’t achieved a GCSE Grade 4 (C) in English and/or Maths, you will be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.

 

Work Experience

Work experience is encouraged but is not compulsory.

Trips, Visits & Guest Speakers

As part of the study programme, tutors will endeavor to arrange guest speakers and visits to relevant work environments and/or manufacturers to gain an understanding of the processes of the industry. Parental/guardian permission for trip is essential and will be sought at the beginning of the course to prevent delays or disappointment.

During your course, we ensure you develop employability skills and gain the relevant experience for your next steps. On completion of your course the choices can be further study, an apprenticeship or a move into industry. We will provide information, advice and support during your course so you can make informed choices based on your career aspirations.
