GCSE Maths (ERC)

A Level maths is available to study at the Flemingate campus in Beverley. We are one of very few colleges nationally which offer this for study by adults in evening classes.

The course runs for two years following the AQA 7357 specification with exams at the conclusion of the period.

Higher level mathematics provides an entry into careers in teaching, business, finance and accountancy, as well as supporting progress in careers in engineering, computing and science. Mathematics also teaches students to think logically and improve their reasoning and problem-solving skills.

What You Will Learn

The main topics studied are:

  • Pure mathematics – including, inter alia, geometry, calculus, problem solving, mathematical proof, logarithms and exponentials, trigonometry, functions, and vectors.
  • Statistics – including sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions, and hypothesis testing
  • Mechanics – Quantities and units in mechanics, kinematics, Forces and Newton’s laws, and Moments.

Entry Requirements

  • Five GCSEs grade A*-C/4-9
  • Successful interview demonstrating motivation and commitment to the course and an initial assessment

What Next?

On successful completion of the course you would have increased career options, particularly in relation to financial work, where employers generally regard good maths skills as desirable. In addition, you could use this as a basis for a teaching qualification (maths is a shortage area) or to continue into Higher education in maths, engineering or computer science.
