People in any situation could benefit from counselling, and those with the correct understanding, knowledge and skills can provide them with support to improve personal well-being.This qualification focusses on key counselling skills to enable you to provide support wherever it is required.The course provides you with an understanding of various theoretical approaches, as well as covering the importance of a counselling relationship and helpful interaction techniques.What will I study?This course does not qualify you to practice as a counsellor but is suitable for those who wish to increase their understanding of counselling skills and techniques in order to engage in helpful interaction appropriately. You could use this knowledge to complement an existing role, or as a basis for continued study to attain a qualification in this sector.
Counselling Skills is split into 4 manageable units plus a practical piece of work which must be videoed or observed by someone qualified to give a witness statement.Unit 1: Using counselling skillsUnit 2: Introduction to counselling skills theoriesUnit 3: Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skillsUnit 4: Counselling skills and personal developmentYou will need to identify an appropriate witness who can observe you demonstrating the core skills of counselling and can provide a witness testimony. An appropriate witness is classed as any person who has relevant experience, knowledge or qualifications in counselling skills.This could vary from:A counselling or interpersonal skills course at level 1A completed or partially completed counselling course at level 2A completed counselling skills unit as part of a larger qualification at level 2 or aboveA short course or courses about counselling skills (e.g. a full day workshop where there was training and practice of counselling skills, or the training provided for workers at voluntary agencies that provide emotional support)A short CPD course in counselling skills.Alternatively if you don’t have access to an appropriate witness, you can record a video of themselves demonstrating particular counselling skills in a helping relationship. Any learners who select this option will need to send their video recording via email.
