Royal Navy give students insight into life at sea

Two Navy chefs visited East Riding College in February to give students from across different curriculum areas an insight into navy careers and life on board ship.

Part of the Royal Navy Logistics Recruitment & Attraction Team, Leading Hand Culinary Specialist (LCS) Emmanuel Craig and Culinary Specialist (CS) Matthew Forfar were on hand to answer any questions the students had about the Naval Service.  The pair gave a presentation on the careers and roles available to those thinking about joining the Royal Navy and then put the students through their paces with a very practical challenge in the College training kitchen.  It was all hands on deck as the students worked in small teams to make a set menu consisting of a main dish and a dessert in just 45 minutes.  The crew served up meatballs and spaghetti followed by either Swiss roll or chocolate brownies.

Whilst the teams – made up of public services and catering students – were cooking their dishes, the navy chefs explained how they would prepare food under the restrictions found on ship, and during wartime.

Public Services courses provide you with the skills, experience and knowledge that will enable you to go onto a career in the fire service, police, prison service, civilian roles in the uniformed services or armed forces. 

The Royal Navy has a multitude of different careers on offer that can range from logistics, engineering, aircrew, catering and communications.
