It’s your first day on the job, and the start of your apprenticeship journey.
Feeling a mix of nerves and excitement? Totally normal! Starting a new role while beginning an apprenticeship means stepping into a new world of work and learning. But with a little preparation, you’ll be ready to make a brilliant first impression.
Here’s your guide to getting off on the right foot:
Even if you’ve already done this before your interview, take time to look over your new employer’s website, your apprenticeship training provider, and your job description again. Get familiar with the role, the company values, and your upcoming responsibilities. Bonus points if you arrive with a few thoughtful questions – it shows you’re switched on and ready to learn.
Make sure you have any documents your employer or training provider might need on day one. This could include:
Being prepared shows you’re organised and committed.
Not sure what to wear? Dress smart for your first day, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. You’ll get a feel for the dress code as you settle in, but first impressions matter, and looking professional helps you start strong
Plan your route and allow extra time in case of delays. Arriving early gives you time to find your way, meet your new team, and settle in without feeling rushed. It’s also a great way to show you’re reliable from the get-go.
When you get to your workstation, make the first move. Say hello, smile, and introduce yourself to your new team. It might feel awkward at first but showing you’re friendly and open makes it easier to start building connections that will help you throughout your apprenticeship.
You’re not expected to know everything on day one! Keep a notebook handy, ask questions, and take notes as you go. You’ll be learning both on the job and through your apprenticeship training, so showing your eagerness to learn is a big win.
Your apprenticeship gives you the unique opportunity to earn, learn, and grow, all at the same time. You’ll gain real work experience, develop industry-recognised skills, and achieve qualifications that set you up for future success.
Your journey starts today, and every step you take from here is a step towards building your career. Stay curious, be kind to yourself, and don’t be afraid to shine.
